Title: Surface Finishing Technician
Location: Cupertino, CA (Onsite)
Duration: 6 months contract
The Advanced Process Lab is a unique facility with equipment that is dedicated to developing & optimizing processes for the Manufacturing Design team. Your role will be to support the execution of polishing projects under oversight of engineers in the lab.
Experience in flat lapping including selection of slurry and pad consumables, measuring surface roughness, and manual fabrication skills. The must have skill here is flat lapping.
In this role, you will be exposed to manufacturing equipment that is used to manufacture mechanical enclosures. Support of developing polishing processes will involve the following tasks:
Run trials of various combinations of mostly lapping and some polishing process steps to achieve the desired final finish on glass, aluminum and steel enclosure parts
Work with our surface finishing team to build all part holding fixturing required, usually laser cut templates for lapping.
Develop 3D feature polishing solutions using compliant backing materials or 3D featured pads on lapping tables, or applying lapping pads to custom tools for spindle mounting.
Setup and polishing machines to execute process trials
Optimize process, measure and define quality at in process and final stages
Document process steps, parameters and prepare samples for review
Experience with flat lapping, including selection of slurry and pad consumables, and other sanding or polishing processes. Experience lapping glass, steel or aluminum a plus.
Experience measuring surface roughness with stylus type profilometer (minimum) or more advanced 3D surface roughness via interferometry/confocol/focus variation methods (preferred)
Some manual fabrication skills required to create the 3D sanding & polishing tools
Drive to meet tight deadlines and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with many different projects is a must
Some 2D CAD, preferable 3D CAD experience a plus.
Education: Technical degree in mechanical, materials, or manufacturing related degree preferred, but not required.
